6th Street Austin has come to become its own being that exists in the minds of both Austinites and tourists alike. The venue has come to be known as one of the prime spots for people to frequent when passing through the city, truly due to the various spots, it has to offer. From the immense bar scene that has created nothing but great memories for many, to the variety of delicious restaurants along the street that can satisfy almost anyone’s palette, 6th Street is truly an amazing cultural landmark for the city of Austin.
The street is extensive and runs throughout downtown Austin, with its main parts sectioned off between I-35 and Mopac. In this concentrated yet rich part of the city is where one can find the entertainment district of Austin and find a beautiful combination of locality and various cultures.
The restaurants included in this list cover almost all types of cuisine and culturally-rich food one can find in the city. From deliciously filling meals to cocktail bars with creative drinks to satisfying sweets cravings, this list is truly the key to the best food on 6th Street. Each one of these restaurants stands apart from the next on factors such as the ambiance of the restaurant and the type of cuisine offered, however, they are all found along the world-renowned avenue.
If I had to pick a few favorites from this list, I would definitely have to single out some options that offer me everything that I need. One of these options would have to be Eureka! The restaurant has an extensive food and drink menu and is truly a great ambiance for almost any event. Patrons are sure to have a great experience at this restaurant, as well as eat some great food.
Likewise, Ramen-Tatsu Ya is another favorite. The unique Japanese cuisine is some of the best I have ever tried and never fails to satisfy my appetite. The courses are huge and always leave me with leftovers, and the restaurant is a great place to take guests for a quick and easy meal.
Lastly, I can’t leave out Voodoo Doughnut is my favorite. I highly recommend this place to everyone visiting not just because it’s a great place to go after a night out for some delicious pastries, but just because the memories one will make from walking into this building surrounded by other bar-goers at 2 AM is something everyone has to experience.
The Jackalope is a tried-and-true Austin dive bar, known for great drinks and incredible food. Located on East 6th St in the Historic District, the bar is known for its delicious burgers, which have been consistently recognized on a national scale. Likewise, they also serve a variety of homemade drinks and several shareable options.
The Jackalope is open every day from 4:00 PM to 2:00 AM, therefore giving patrons time to come by and enjoy a couple of drinks and some appetizing meals before they come back for the real fun.
The restaurant does not accept Apple Pay, however, they do accept credit cards and other traditional forms of payment, and they also do not do food delivery.
The Grove Wine Bar and Kitchen is the perfect mix of elegance with a laid-back Austin flare. It is the perfect place to go out on a sweet evening date, or also to pop in for some delicious brunch and mimosas. Vaquero Taquero is a local and family-owned business highly regarded by locals as some of the best tacos you can find in ATX, and that’s saying something in a city where tex-mex is an integral part of one’s upbringing.
The restaurant is located on the corner of Sabine St and 6th, right off I-35. Vaquero Taquero offers freshly made tacos in both traditional and creative flavors, as well as several types of quesadillas and also breakfast tacos. I could not bring myself to make a review of the best restaurants on 6th Street without including the one and only Voodoo Doughnut. Voodoo is the place to go when the bars are starting to close and you are trying to get something in you before going home and passing out.
They offer a huge variety of doughnut flavors and sport an amazing atmosphere inside of the establishment. The line tends to get a bit long after hours, but it goes by quickly and the staff is amazingly nice and helpful. You will definitely make some good memories scarfing down these delicious doughnuts.
Voodoo is open every day from 5 AM to 3 AM. They offer both delivery and takeout, and also accept all forms of contactless payment.
The Iron Cactus serves up contemporary Mexican food from various regions of the country. What was once a turn-of-the-century building on 6th Street, the restaurant was restored in 1996 and is now famous for its immense amount of tequila options. Iron Cactus serves over 100 different types of tequila, and has been recognized on a national scale as one of the top 10 tequila bars in the country. Their amazing margaritas can be paired with various taco plates, enchiladas, and other traditional Mexican plates.
Iron Cactus is open Sunday 10 AM to 10:30 PM, Monday through Thursday 11 AM to 10:30 PM, and Friday to Saturday 11 AM to 11 PM. Their happy hour occurs 3 to 6 PM on weekdays.

Irene’s is an American cuisine restaurant and bar located just East of Shoal Creek. They offer great drinks and even better bar food, such as several shareable options, sliders, tacos and sandwiches. Their food is sure to fill you up and make you feel some of that Austin comfort while also enjoying an aesthetically-pleasing drink. The restaurant is great to take a group of girlfriends to to enjoy the weekend with, offering a beautiful and spacious interior and patio.
