247 – The rupture of part of Mine 18, belonging to Braskem, in Maceió, should reduce the ground’s acceleration due to the filling of the cavity with rock and water from the lagoon. “There is no possibility, based on the data that is being demonstrated, of a chain reaction, as was speculated, the other mines continue with the same pressure as before. And the sensors on the surface themselves do not show accelerated speed, they remain normal”, he said the coordinator of Municipal Civil Defense, Abelardo Nobre, told G1.
Still according to him, “the roof of the mine broke and it is precisely the place that had been delimited by the technicians. It is an area that was already unoccupied. There is no risk of being expanded [o rompimento]On the contrary, it will now enter a slowdown.” “Now we will continue to monitor the area and assess the environmental damage. We also have to reinforce that people stay away from the site”, highlighted Nobre.

According to the report, Civil Defense and the Environmental Institute are evaluating the impacts on the ecosystem of the Mundaú lagoon, where the mine ruptured. Professor Emerson Soares, from the Federal University of Alagoas (Ufal), said that there is concern about the living organisms in the area due to the salinization of the lagoon. The professor considers, however, that the impact should be less than that caused by pollution in the lagoon.
