Inter Milan defender Francesco Acerbi believes that while the team played well against Man City in the Champions League final, they could’ve done more.
The 35-year-old spoke to UEFA Magazine, via FCInterNews.
Last season, Inter came painfully close to getting their hands on European club football’s biggest honour.
The Nerazzurri reached the Champions League final. They had to dispatch the likes of Barcelona, Porto, Benfica, and AC Milan to get there.
Many expected that Inter would be major underdogs in the final against Manchester City.
This was because of the Cityzens’ status as a dominant force in English football, and imperious form through the campaign.
But Inter’s performance was not that of a team coming up against superior opposition.
Instead, the Nerazzurri went toe-to-toe with the Premier League champions.
From possession to shots and shots on target, Inter held their own and had chances to get something more out of the match.
Inter Defender Francesco Acerbi: We Could’ve Done Better Vs Man City
But Inter lost by a 0-1 scoreline.
And whilst Acerbi acknowledges that the Nerazzurri did put in a performance, he doesn’t feel that that was enough. The former Lazio and Sassuolo defender feels that the team could have turned that into the result, and the trophy, but didn’t.
Of last season’s Champions League run, Acerbi said that “It was an excellent season.”
“The only thing we screwed up was losing in the final,” he added.
“We played well, but we could have brought it home,” Acerbi lamented.
The defender said that “I don’t read the newspapers much. But I just saw the fans who weren’t happy, and I thought, we could have brought joy to so many people.”
And of the new summer signings at Inter, Acerbi said that “We’ve helped them settle in right away.”
“It’s easy for this generation, they’re all very calm,” he added.
