TBJ Plus: Original Buffalo wings spot coming to Raleigh; Roy Cooper for President?; Tar Heels chase history wi – The Business Journals

ORIGINAL BUFFALO WINGS COMING TO RALEIGH: Raleigh is about to get a taste of an original. The Anchor Bar is expanding with five more franchise locations, including the City of Oaks.
In addition to Raleigh, The Anchor Bar Franchise & Development Co. LLC has signed letters of intent or lease agreements for five new franchises that will bring the restaurant’s original Buffalo wings to more than 20 sites, reports Buffalo Business First.
Founded by Frank and Teressa Bellissimo in 1935, the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, is credited as the birthplace of the chicken wing in 1964. The company began franchising in 2009 with a restaurant in the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, then signed a second deal in 2017.
The Anchor Bar Franchise & Development CEO Mark Dempsey, who started with Anchor Bar 20 years ago and co-owns the franchise company with Marcie Wright and Terry Lerner, the granddaughter of the Bellissimos, said he works closely with franchisees to select the right locations and partners to best represent the brand, BBF said.
COOPER 2024?: With the midterms (mostly) behind us, the pundits are already looking ahead to the 2024 presidential election, and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s name is being tossed around as a potential contender.
Of course, it all depends on whether President Joe Biden runs for a second term. But Cooper is a rising force in the Democrat Party, and his ability to win over voters of all stripes in a purple state like North Carolina is a big bonus – he was first elected in 2016 and easily won re-election in 2020. With Florida all but lost to the GOP, the Democrats will be fighting hard to win in North Carolina in 2024.
“Cooper, 65, could be a tonic — affable, sensible, with no whiff of ideologue in him,” writes Frank Bruni, a journalism professor at Duke University, in a new piece for The New York Times. “… He praises and models the qualities of competence and pragmatism.”
POPULATION MILESTONE: On Nov. 15, the world’s population will reach 8 billion, projects the United Nations.
This unprecedented growth is due to the gradual increase in human lifespan owing to improvements in public health, nutrition, personal hygiene and medicine, the U.N. said, adding that it is also the result of high and persistent levels of fertility in some countries.
But get this. The U.N. says that while it took the global population a dozen years to grow from 7 billion to 8 billion, it will take approximately 15 years – until 2037 – for it to reach 9 billion, a sign that the overall growth rate of the global population is slowing.
UNC/CLEMSON TO VIE FOR ACC TITLE: The game has been set: the No. 13 UNC Tar Heels are taking on the No. 9 Clemson Tigers for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship in Charlotte on Dec. 3.
The Tar Heels are 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the ACC, while the Tigers are 9-1, 7-0. While Clemson had its hopes of a berth in the College Football Playoffs all but dashed with a big loss to Notre Dame, Tar Heel fans will no doubt remember the last time they vied for an ACC title. It came in 2015 and produced a 45-37 loss to the Tigers.
The last time the Tar Heels won the ACC championship was in 1980, when they were helmed by Dick Crum and suited up arguably the best linebacker to ever put on a football uniform: Lawrence Taylor.
FAMOUS HOTEL IMPLODES: A noted Miami beach hotel that has played host to a number of famous guests, including John F. Kennedy and the Beatles, underwent a planned implosion Sunday morning after falling into disrepair and being declared unsafe.
NBC 6 South Florida has video of the Deauville Beach Resort implosion.
