TODAY key for the release of Bishop Rolando Álvarez: An urgent appeal from the United States Congress

The situation of Bishop Rolando Álvarez in Nicaragua: An urgent call for freedom

The US Congressional Subcommittee will hold a hearing on November 30 to discuss the imprisonment of Nicaraguan bishop Rolando Álvarez. This hearing, titled “An urgent call to let Bishop Álvarez go,” will be broadcast live by ADF International, an organization that has requested the release of Bishop Álvarez before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

Unfortunately, the Sandinista dictatorship has manipulated and created a false situation around Bishop Álvarez, who is currently serving a 26-year prison sentence. Despite the dictatorship’s attempts to show a positive image, Bishop Álvarez’s thinness and appearance contradict this narrative.

Recently, the Sandinista dictatorship has released photographs of the visits that Bishop Álvarez has received from his relatives in La Modelo prison. According to the statement from the Ministry of the Interior, these photographs and a video show alleged preferential treatment towards Bishop Álvarez, with medical consultations, family visits and receipt of packages. However, the images reveal the bishop’s deteriorating health, evidencing his thinness and paleness.

It is important to highlight that these confinement conditions do not reflect reality. Bishop Álvarez is in a maximum security cell known as “El Infiernillo.” The Sandinista dictatorship tries to deceive Nicaraguans and the international community with its supposed preferential treatment, but the photographs show the true situation of Bishop Álvarez.

Given this situation, the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Managua, Monsignor Silvio Báez, considers that the Sandinista dictatorship is trying to justify its crime and demands the immediate and unconditional release of Bishop Álvarez. The exiled priest, Edwing Román, has also expressed indignation and pain upon seeing the images of Bishop Álvarez in a setting prepared for the photo, while his face reveals another reality.

It is important to highlight that both the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights have ordered the government of Nicaragua to immediately release Bishop Álvarez and protect his life, health and personal integrity. Unfortunately, Daniel Ortega’s regime has ignored these measures, putting Bishop Álvarez’s life at risk.

It is essential that the international community be informed about the situation of Bishop Álvarez in Nicaragua. We must raise our voices in solidarity with the priests who are unjustifiably imprisoned and demand their freedom. Bishop Álvarez’s situation is a reminder of the importance of protecting human rights and religious freedom around the world.

Together, we can make a difference and work towards a world where justice and respect are the fundamental pillars of our society.
