(AFP).- Former United States President Donald Trump went to a federal court in the state of Florida on Monday to attend a closed-door hearing in the case of mismanagement of top-secret government documents.

The judge in the case, Aileen Cannon, summoned the defense of the former president (2017-2021) and the members of the Prosecutor’s Office to address how access to classified evidence in the case would be treated.

Trump and his entourage arrived at the Fort Pierce court in the morning, about 200 km north of Miami (southeast), where a group of followers were waiting for them with banners of support for his campaign to contest the November elections. The 77-year-old Republican politician left the judicial facilities shortly after 2:00 p.m. (7:00 p.m. GMT).

Last year, Trump pleaded not guilty to illegally retaining classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago Florida residence and hindering the FBI’s efforts to recover them.

To prepare the case, his lawyers want to obtain access to classified evidence held by the Prosecutor’s Office, something the latter opposes, alleging that it is too sensitive material.

“Defense attorneys should be prepared to discuss their defense theories of the case, in detail, and how any classified information could be relevant or useful to the defense,” Cannon wrote in the court document in which he called the hearing.

The judge heard the defense arguments until early in the afternoon, before receiving the Prosecutor’s Office, also behind closed doors.

The start of this trial is scheduled for May 20. Along with Trump, the administrator of the Mar-a-Lago complex, Carlos de Oliveira, and the former president’s personal assistant, Waltine Nauta, will sit in the dock.

In recent weeks, Trump appeared at hearings in several of the cases opened against him.

His judicial problems do not seem to stop at the moment his aspiration to return to the White House with a victory in the presidential elections in November. On the contrary, Trump is the great favorite to lead the Republicans in those elections.
