The Office of former Chilean President Sebastián Piñera confirmed that he died after suffering a plane crash in his helicopter in Lake Ranco, Chile, through a statement.
The TVN Chile network broadcast the statement in which it said:
“It is with deep regret that we announce the death of the former president of the Republic of Chile, Sebastián Piñera Echenique.”
“During the afternoon of this Tuesday, February 6, 2024, the former president suffered a plane accident in the Los Ríos Region. Information about their funerals will be announced in due course. “We appreciate the massive expressions of affection and concern that we have received during these bitter hours,” he added.
Following the announcement, the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, He provided details about his death and also expressed his condolences to Piñera’s family at a press conference.
Tohá explained that there were 4 crew members, of which 3 were able to reach the shore and are out of danger, but Piñera unfortunately lost his life.
He indicated that the Armed Forces arrived at the site and recovered the body of the former president.
“We want, first of all, to express our shock at this tragedy and to extend our solidarity hug to the family of the former president, to all those close to him, but also to all Chileans because Piñera was a democratic president of Chile on two occasions and will consequently have all the republican honors and recognitions that he deserves,” the minister said.
“We will remember him for the way he gave and dedicated his life to public service,” he added.
Tohá announced that a state funeral will be held and also declared National duel after his death.
